Spring on the Ranch: Newborn Calves, Pomsky Puppies, and the Season of New Life

🌱 Spring on the Ranch: Newborn Calves, Pomsky Puppies, and the Season of New Life 🌱

Spring has a way of awakening everything on the ranch.

Here at Maine Aim Ranch in Iowa, spring means one beautiful thing above all else — new life.

Right now, everywhere we look, there are newborn calves and Pomsky puppies arriving into the world, filling our family ranch with movement, sound, and the sweetest kind of chaos.

The grass begins to green.

The air softens.

And across the barns and pastures… life begins again.

And everywhere you look… there is new life.

Right now at Maine Aim Ranch, babies are quite literally everywhere.

Newborn calves finding their legs for the very first time.

Tiny Pomsky puppies tucked beside their mama are just beginning the earliest stage of life, which we explore more in our guide to puppy development from birth to eight weeks.

Little tails, wobbly steps, soft nickers, and the sweetest newborn squeaks filling the barns and home.

It is, without question, cuteness overload.

And if there is one thing people everywhere can agree on, it’s this:

everyone loves babies — especially animal babies.

We certainly don’t have a shortage of them right now.

They are bounding, stretching, wobbling, and growing all across the ranch.

Sleepless Nights and Sacred Work

Spring also means something else here:

VERY LITTLE SLEEP!

Calving season brings late and mid-night barn checks, quiet flashlight walks, camera watching and the waiting that comes with welcoming new calves safely into the world. The readiness to trow your boots on and run outside.

At the same time, inside our home, newborn puppies need round-the-clock care — making sure tiny bellies stay full, that every puppy is warm, content, and thriving.

It’s a season of alarms set through the night, early mornings, and long days.

It is exhausting at times.

But it is also deeply sacred work.

A Day in Our Spring Life

Our days begin at the crack of dawn.

Checking cows.

Feeding cattle.

Milking our cow.

Tending to newborn puppies.

Making sure every little belly is full.

Cleaning pens and bedding.

Socializing and handling each puppy.

Grooming, exercising, and early training on pups and continued training on adults.

And in between all of it — loving them.

Each calf.

Each puppy.

Each life placed in our care.

Our days are full.

They are busy.

They are messy.

They are demanding.

And they are also filled with smiles, laughter, and a deep sense of purpose.

Blessed to Live This Life

There are moments when the hours feel long and our bodies feel tired.

But the truth is — the four of us love this life with all our hearts.

We would not trade it.

To raise animals with intention.

To steward life.

To watch new beginnings unfold each spring.

To work together as a family.

To live close to the land God entrusted to us.

We know this is a gift.

And we are deeply grateful that God allows us to do this work and witness this miracle of new life — even in the exhaustion, even in the long nights, even in the muddy boots and full days.

Because everywhere we look right now…there is new life and only God can create such amazing animals and for us to be apart of it is truly a blessing.

Raised with intention. Grateful for every season of life.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
And lean not on your own understanding;
In all your ways acknowledge Him,
And He shall direct your paths.”
— Proverbs 3:5–6 (NKJV)

"Do your best. Let God do the rest."
